“I’m about to fall back asleep when the lion roars again, a series of deep exhales that you know can only be made by a large, forceful animal.”

So begins chapter 10 of Rick Ridgeway’s The Shadow of Kilimanjaro: On Foot Across East Africa. In 1997, Ridgeway, his guides, and a few fellow travelers completed a foot safari across the Tsavo Desert. The book is replete with encounters with wild animals, historical research of the wild country, and nuanced observations about the past, present, and future of the area. It’s a captivating read, and is sure to provoke discussion. Join us on Sunday, March 18 at 4:00 pm in the Great Hall of Carlsson Evald. Professor Todd Cleveland will lead our conversation.
