We will be open to the Augustana community in the afternoons by appointment only. On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays (Memorial Day and Independence Day), the library will be closed.

Library Prize

Attention, first-year students! You could win $400 for your research!

The Tredway Library Prize for First-Year Research recognizes an outstanding research paper written by a first-year Augustana student for a class in the Liberal Studies or Honors sequence. The award promotes students’ active engagement in the processes of library research and encourages them to synthesize library research skills with the reading, writing and critical thinking skills developed in the first-year sequence.

For a full description of the library prize and how to apply, visit http://www.augustana.edu/x34770.xml.

Good luck!

Book discussion: The Shadow of Kilimanjaro

“I’m about to fall back asleep when the lion roars again, a series of deep exhales that you know can only be made by a large, forceful animal.”

So begins chapter 10 of Rick Ridgeway’s The Shadow of Kilimanjaro: On Foot Across East Africa. In 1997, Ridgeway, his guides, and a few fellow travelers completed a foot safari across the Tsavo Desert. The book is replete with encounters with wild animals, historical research of the wild country, and nuanced observations about the past, present, and future of the area. It’s a captivating read, and is sure to provoke discussion. Join us on Sunday, March 18 at 4:00 pm in the Great Hall of Carlsson Evald. Professor Todd Cleveland will lead our conversation.

Changes in the library

The Denkmann Library Reading Room in 1964

Changes are coming to Tredway Library! If you haven’t already heard, the college is constructing a Center for Student Life that will be connected to the existing library building. Over the next year and a half, you’ll notice a lot of changes inside the library: books will move,  Special Collections will expand, offices will be relocated, a computer classroom will be available, and much more. (To see floor plans of the new building, go to http://www.augustana.edu/x39054.xml)

This is not the first time the library has changed. The library used to be located in Denkmann Hall and looked quite different from how it does today. Enjoy a slideshow of Denkmann library photos from Special Collections at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/augustanaspecialcollections/sets/72157608025755292/  or, if you prefer, pay a visit  to Special Collections to see the originals.

No Reservations

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten while traveling? What type of cuisine would you like to try, but never have? Where in the world would you most like to go?

If you like to travel, or you like to eat, and most especially if you like to do both, come to the next “Travel Reads” book club discussion on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 4:00 p.m. in the Great Hall of Carlsson Evald. We will discuss the colorful (!) coffee table book No Reservations by Anthony Bourdain. Bourdain traveled the world filming episodes for his culinary television show and he recorded some of his most interesting stories — and photographs – in this book. You’ll never believe some of the things he’s eaten!

Open forum for students

Attention, students! Are you interested in the future of the library? Then come to an open forum sponsored by SGA on Monday, Dec. 12 at 8:00 PM in Olin Auditorium. This is an opportunity to view the latest floor plans for the proposed Center for Student Life, to ask questions, and to let your voice be heard!
