Children’s books set to music.

Need a study break? Want some new music in your life?

On Tuesday evening, September 22 at 8:00, professor Susan Bawden, who plays bassoon, and colleagues will perform The Children’s Book Suite by Mike Curtis who is the principal bassoonist with the Eugene, Oregon Symphony. Featured in the work are Babar the King, Curious George Goes to the Library, and The Story of Ping. During the piece, illustrations from the books will be projected in Wallenberg Hall. And the musicians may have some fun with their instruments.

The children’s books featured in the piece are on display in the library. Now, who could resist Curious George in the library? I wonder what kind of trouble he gets into; maybe he decides to rearrange the books.

Also on the program are:

“Concerto for Bassoon and Wind Ensemble” (with piano instead) by Eric Ewazen

“Nightfall” by Deborah Anderson (2003) flute, clarinet, bassoon, piano

“Trio” by Donald Draganski (1995) flute, clarinet, bassoon

Ms. Bawden will be joined by Susan Schwaegler, clarinet, Janet Stodd, flute, and Gail Baldwin, piano.

Rebecca Wee to read in The River Readings

Ushering in the third year of The River Readings at Augustana will be our own professor of English and resident poet Rebecca Wee. Rebecca’s reading takes place tomorrow, Thursday, at 7:00 p.m. in Wallenberg Hall. An accomplished and prize-winning writer, Rebecca’s first book Uncertain Grace was published in 2001 by Copper Canyon Press, one of our country’s most acclaimed publishers of poetry. For that book, Rebecca won the Hayden Carruth Award for New and Emerging Poets. Selected by then poet laureate Billy Collins as a Witter Bynner Fellow in 2002, Rebecca has also served as poet laureate of the Quad Cities from 2003 to 2005. And in addition to these accolades, Rebecca is a gifted and beloved teacher. We are so fortunate to have her as part of our faculty and community. Please join me and other members of the Augie and greater community in welcoming Rebecca tomorrow evening. Here is an excerpt from Rebecca’s poem “What Do We Plant” that she wrote at 10 years old:
What do we plant when we plant the tree?
We plant the tables for you and me.
We plant the chairs and wooden stairs
and fences to keep in the mares.
We plant all these things for the horse and me,
and we plant them when we plant the tree.

Guess the number of candies and win the jar!

candy_jar

Can you guess how many candies are in this jar? The candies represent the number of questions Special Collections staff assisted researchers with between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009. The three types of candy in the jar represent students; Augustana faculty, staff, and administration; and community members.

The jar will be on display during the Special Collections open house this afternoon (Thursday, 4-5pm), and for the next week in Special Collections.  The twenty closest guesses will be entered in a drawing to win the candy and jar.

WordSlough Writing Contest Winner!

She’s done it again. Kim Hedlin, winner of last year’s WordSlough writing contest, sent in another prize-winning poem for this year’s 4th annual WordSlough Writing Contest. A sophomore English major and psychology minor, Kim has a way with words, at least with the WordSlough vocabulary. Congratulations, Kim!

Kim’s poem:

My initial intention was to create an intricate masterpiece so full of literary jargon, koans, and esoteric allusions that critics would devote years creating an exegesis of my work. However, due to a shortage of time, I had no choice but to pule and sigh and create what is printed below.

A Day at the Zoo

An ABC Poem

Our day at the zoo was so much fun.

There was lots to do and see!

Listen to all the things we did

As we go from A to Z!

We admired the aplomb of an alligator.

We bamboozled a brilliant baboon.

We chuckled at a chubby cheetah.

We determined the donkey was as dead as a detritus.

We exculpated an erroneous elephant.

We fancied a flamingo feasting on focaccia.

We gazed at a gamboling giraffe.

We hid from a heinous hippopotamus.

We irritated an irascible iguana.

We joked with a jovial jaguar.

We kidded a kooky kangaroo.

We lamented the luck of a lugubrious lion.

We missed a macabre match between monkeys.

We nodded to a notable narwhal.

We objurgated an obnoxious ostrich.

We petted a prurient peacock.

We quieted a querulous quail.

We roused a rambunctious rabbit.

We shushed the sibilance of a snake.

We tried to talk to a taciturn tiger.

We unexpectedly unearthed a unicorn.

We vilified a voluptuary vulture.

We watched a waggling walrus.

We took a break.

We yelled at a yawning yak.

We zoomed in on a zebra zipping in the zephyr.

That’s the end of our adventure,

So now our poem is done.

It has no heuristic value,

But didn’t we have fun?
