“By Hand” is new library display

Before computers, artists designed lettering and illustrations by hand. The new display on 2nd floor of the library is a colorful and lively collection of commercial products that show such hand made designs. From boxes of toys to lingerie to soap powder, these containers reveal designs that were influenced by Art Nouveau, by Asian art and German, French, and British letterforms, and by Art Deco as it trickled down into common use in everyday packaging. The items were collected by painter Les Bell who is also Professor of Art at St. Ambrose University. Meet Les and hear his short talk about his collection at the opening reception on Wednesday, November 16, at 4:30 p.m. Yummy (and colorful) refreshments served! See the accompanying display of books, too, on graphic design, illustration, and color. The books are available for checkout. And here you can link to more information and a short slide show of Les and his “boxes”:  http://www.augustana.edu/x38056.xml
